1,4-Butanedisulfonic acid is a polybasic organic compound that is used in the manufacture of S-adenosyl-L-methionine. It is also used as an organic solvent and as a reagent for the synthesis of linear growth inhibitors. 1,4-Butanedisulfonic acid can be dehydrated to give the alicyclic compound 1,4-butynediol. The molecule contains a formyl group that can react with nucleophiles such as amines or alcohols to form sulfonamides. It can also be used as a chromatographic mobile phase component.
