D-Glycero-D-manno-heptose is a glycosyl compound that belongs to the group of antimicrobial agents. It was first isolated from broth culture of E. coli K-12 and found to have strong activity against S. aureus, S. typhi, and other Gram-positive bacteria. D-Glycero-D-manno-heptose has been shown to inhibit the enzyme phosphatase in human serum and monoclonal antibody. It also has been shown to have a basic structure with phosphate groups on both ends of the molecule that may be involved in hydrogen bonding interactions with other molecules in vitro assays. The chemical structure of D-Glycero-D-manno-heptose is similar to polymyxin B and fluorescence probes, which are used as antibiotics or fluorescent labels respectively.
