Clinodiside A is a sialic acid-binding agent that was discovered to be effective against the protozoan parasite Leishmania. Clinodiside A can be used as an alternative to methoprene, which is currently being used in the control of sand fly populations. Clinodiside A has also been found to be effective against viruses and some types of bacteria. The molecule consists of two linear chains that are linked by a disulfide bond at one end. This compound binds to the monomers that make up the cell wall in a virus or bacterial cell and inhibits their formation, leading to cell death.
