L-xylulose is a xylulose. It has a role as a human metabolite, an Escherichia coli metabolite and a mouse metabolite. It is an enantiomer of a D-xylulose.
L-Threo-2-pentulose, also known as L-lyxulose or L-xul, belongs to the class of organic compounds known as pentoses. These are monosaccharides in which the carbohydrate moiety contains five carbon atoms. L-Threo-2-pentulose is soluble (in water) and a very weakly acidic compound (based on its pKa). L-Threo-2-pentulose has been detected in multiple biofluids, such as urine, blood, and cerebrospinal fluid. Within the cell, L-threo-2-pentulose is primarily located in the cytoplasm. L-Threo-2-pentulose can be converted into L-xylulose 1-phosphate and L-xylulose 5-phosphate.
L-Xylulose is a pentose sugar that can be used as a precursor for the synthesis of l-xylitol and arabinitol. L-Xylulose is an intermediate in the pentose phosphate pathway, which produces ribose 5-phosphate and NADPH. L-Xylulose has been shown to have anticancer activity by inhibiting polymerase chain reactions (PCRs) in cancerous tissues. This effect has been attributed to its ability to reduce the levels of dNTPs, which are required for DNA replication. L-Xylulose also inhibits aerobic respiration, which may be due to its ability to inhibit enzymatic activity of both ribitol dehydrogenase and l-arabinitol dehydrogenase.
